Striking the cue ball below center. If one wanted to split hairs you could say that for it to be english it would have to be off center to the right or left
with center low just being draw. If you hear or read about low left or low right this is what they are talking about. In other words, the low means below the
horizontal center line and english referes to being on one side or the other of the vertical center line. Kinda odd, here we call it english but in England
they call it side

Great responce Pelican.
Micheal, being that you are a new player learn how to use low english (aka draw, bottom), and high english (aka top, topspin, follow) before you start to worry about left and right english. Once you have low, and high english down then add the rest in. I would play much better if I had learned how to move the cue ball around with top and bottom rather than left and right first. Just a thought
Hey man, them ain't high heel sneakers,
And they sure don't look like cowboy boots.
And that ain't rock and roll you're playin'
And it sure ain't country or rhythm and blues.
You're singing a song about making love to your drummer,
Well, gay guitar pickers don't turn me on.
And we don't all get into Donna Summer,
Do you happen to know any old Hank Williams songs?
'Cause you see I'm a dinosaur,
I should have died out a long time before.
Have pity on a dinosaur.
Hand me my hat.
Excuse me ma'am, where's the door?

Very good advice Carlton. Seems new shooters always want to 'juice' the cueball with english and spin it all over the place. This equates to no
control. Michael, you have to remember that when you use right or left english; no matter if it is high, low, or center, you have to contend with (a)
deflection and (b) throw on the object ball. Takes a lot of experience to learn to compensate for these two factors.
There are three things that will allow you to become a top notch pool player, (1) practice (2) practice and (3) practice . Sounds like a bad joke but it's true. I would recommend you use
Carlton's suggestion and learn as much as you can on cueball control using follow and draw before trying to get heavy into side english.
Enjoy the game, Pel

Michael, welcome to our little discussion board, I trust you will enjoy it here. Pelican is spot on with his answer to your question and what Carlton is
telling you is good advice. I, as would Carlton, would tell you to FIRST learn were the cue ball is going with no spin on it (top, botton, left, right, etc.)
that is what is the natural path of the cue ball with a "dead ball" hit, then learn the effects of top (follow, high, etc.) and bottom (draw, low,
etc).
The point is, untill you know the natural path of the cue ball, how do you know you want to change it? (A little over simplified I admit.) Howerver, "dead ball" (where the cue ball slides into the object ball with no top, bottom, or side) is you reference point. Learn that first! Some call it a stop shot (that is if you hit the object ball full on the cue ball will dead stop when it hits. It is not easy to learn for it requires a mixture of speed and bottom. The bottom is because the friction with the cloth causes the cue ball to want to roll. So the softer you shoot or the longer the distance between the cue ball and the object ball the more bottom you need to get the cue ball to slide (transition) into the object ball, and vice versa. That is the harder you shoot the less bottom needed. It is call "transition" because the cue ball is spinning backwards and the friction with the cloth will cause it to eventuall "transition" to rolling farward. (Note: a cue ball just rolling across the table has "top spin" or "follow" on it.) You want to first learn to be able to cause the cue ball to strike the object ball when it transitions. That is your basic reference point. Keep hit'em.

Michael, whenever the Professor speaks, listen. I wish I could do one of them there mind meld things Dr. Spook did so I could put his pool knowledge in my
head. Afraid my 'bird' brain couldn't hold it all
